What’s the difference between a composer and a songwriter?
Composers tend to write instrumental music, whereas songwriters write songs.
What are the responsibilities of a composer/songwriter?
Write music (sometimes to a brief). Sometimes be involved with the performance - perhaps by conducting.
What does a producer do in the recording studio?
Has overall responsibility for the project, liaise between creative partners, ensure sample clearance, make suggestions to make the project better.
What are the responsibilities of a musical director (MD)?
Conducting (and sometimes playing piano), scheduling rehearsals, arranging music, covering absences and ensuring they have the correct musicians in their band.
What are the responsibilities of a live sound technician?
Planning the stage sound setup, rigging/de-rigging, overseeing the rest of the tech crew, sound checking.
What is the main difference between a live sound technician and a studio technician?
Live sound technicians are found at live gigs/concerts, not in recording studios.
What is the term roadie short for?
Road crew.
What does logistics mean?
Right stuff in the right place at the right time.
What are the responsibilities of roadies?
Moving equipment in and out of venues, being involved with setting up, driving.
What are the responsibilities of instrumental support technicians?
Make sure all of the instruments needed for the gig/concert are working at their best.
What are the responsibilities of an artist manager?
Look after the band, advise on financial matters and contracts, negotiate fees, find the band opportunities, work with record labels and venues.
What does FOH stand for?
Front of House
What are the responsibilities of a venue manager?
Booking events in, licensing, management of staff, management of publicity, management of security, the health and safety of everyone in the venue.
What are the responsibilities of a studio manager?
Manage the schedule of the studio, ensure all equipment is up to date and in working order.
What are the responsibilities of a promoter?
Matching artists to venues, overseeing live events.
What does A&R stand for?
Artists and Repertoire.
What do A&R reps do?
Scout for new talent - artists for artists and repertoire for songs.
What do recording engineers do?
Set up and record projects in a recording studio.
