Jib/Head sail Flashcards
What are the two winches for and where are they located.
They are located in the cockpit, and are used to control the shape of the jib. They are also used for the running back stays, to support the mast
How do you raise the Head sail
You need to be sailing into wind, then you need to use the jib halliard until the luff (leading edge of the sail) is tight, then as you are doing this you need to keep pulling on the jibsheet with the winch so it is just flapping to make it easier to raise, when the sail is raised you turn out of the wind and make the jib tight so it catches the wind
What is a tack
Change of course by turning a boat’s head into and through the wind, which will make the jib go on the other side of the boat
How do you tack
The helmsman will shout “ready to tack” then the winch on the side of the current tack (wherever the sail is) will prepare to let the sheet fly (let it go free) then the winch on the other side will prepare to pull in the sheet with the winch, when both sides are ready they will shout port/starboard ready then the helmsman will shout “helm a’lee” then when it is time to let go and start pulling in the helman will shout “let fly” and the old tack will let the line run free and the new tack will start pulling in the sheet
How do you take down the headsail
You let the halliard drop slowly, at the same you need to make sure the jibsheet are being loosend around the winches, you need a few people to grab the sheet as it is being lowered and bring it on deck, so it does not go into the water, this involves grabbing the sail and bringing it over the guardrail, then you need to tie the sail to the guard rail with sail ties and a slipknot
