A

He initially considered a coup against Diem but his advisors argued it could result in an unstable leader. the US later agreed they would not stop a coup. but Kennedy was horrified when Diem was murdered.

A

he pursued counterinsurgency methods against communism in general. He sent more advisors and arms to Vietnam and by the end of his presidency there were 16,000 advisers in Vietnam.

A

started by Westmoreland which involved flying troops into VC villages, killing the inhabitants and then destroying the village. measuring success on the body count of enemies.

A

counting every body as an enemy combatant wasn’t always true and many deaths were civilians. this led to the killing of as many people as possible to get greater success even if they were civilians.

A

the plan by the VC to launch simultaneous attacks on south Vietnamese cities to catch the Americans by surprise. the attack was launched during Tet in Saigon. in Hue the fighting was house to house with executions being prevalent.

A

the north and initial success but were counter attacked by the Americans and were driven out of all southern strongholds and the civilians didn’t rise up as the VC had planned.

A

A

he was in talks with both sides of the Vietnamese claiming to have a better peace deal if he was to be elected and they shouldn’t sign any peace deals before that. and in October LBJ’s peace deal falls through.

A

it was illegal and could be considered treason.

A

he sent more troops and bombs to Vietnam, and increased the bombing of Cambodia as the Ho Chi Minh trail ran through. this campaign was kept secret from the American people as Cambodia was neutral.

A

it would limit American troops in the war, rather training locals to support air power.

A

it demoralised the south and American troops began to question why they should fight if the war was winding down, this was not good for winning a war and led to increase in fragging.

A

where generals would send their men into meaningless battles and fights.

A

accelerated effort to search for VC within hamlets and destroy political infrastructure. methods included torture and assassinations which killed around 20,000 VC between 1965-72.
this was used as a method to settle scores which was rife with corruption and saw many civilians killed.

A

This gave Henry Kissinger a wide birth to come up with many ideas some of which included nukes, land invasion of the North and an attempt to exploit breaking points.
Nixon abandons this due to fears of further anti war sentiment.

A

Nixon tells the American people he needs time to achieve peace, and mention the patriotic silent majority unlike the load protesting students. this proved popular as many saw themselves in the silent majority.

A

after the publication of massacres such as My Lai and further anti war sentiment, congress also adopt some of this by banning American troops from engaging in Laos and Thailand.

A

after Nixon announced the Invasion of Cambodia in 1970 the war seemed never ending. universities closed out of protest and congress protested.

what was Operation Linebacker?

A

1972 Nixon bombs the north in the bombing of Hanoi and Haiphong, the US air force suffering heavy losses with some refusing to take part as it caused too many losses.

A

Paris peace accords 1973, the US agreed to leave within 60 days, the North would release all POWs and there would be gradual reunification.
but the North took the south in 1975 with congress rejecting president Fords argument to help.
