Rosh Hashanah

A

The translation from Hebrew is ‘The Head of the Year’. It is generally referred to as the Jewish New Year and is held for two days in late September. it is the 1st of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the creation of the world as described in the Torah.

The 10 ‘Days of Awe’

A

The 10 Days of Awe is a ten-day period that begins with Rosh Hashanah and ends with Yom Kippur. In these 10 days, Jews focus on the Book of Life and Death. They try to right all their wrongs and seek forgiveness.

Yom Kippur

A

Yom Kippur is often referred to as the ‘Day of Atonement.’ It is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Yom Kippur is the final atonement before the Books of Life and Death are sealed. During this time adults - who are able to - are required to fast for the entire day and are to not do any other forms of pleasure.

Hanukkah

A

Hanukkah is the Jewish festival celebrating the recovery of Jerusalem and the rededication of the Second temple. It means Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is the Jewish Christmas. It goes for 8 nights and days and starts on the 25th day of Kislev (Jewish month).
They eat special food, sing songs, play games, give gifts, dance and give Hanukkah gelt/chocolate coin. The Story of Hanukkah is that they only had a light that was meant one day when they were rebuilding the second temple but it miraculously lasted the entire holiday.
On each night
During Hanukkah you use a Hanukkah Menorah - a nine branched candelabra - to symbolise the 8 days/nights of Hanukkah.

The Passover

A

The Passover (Pesach) is a celebration of how Hebrews gained their freedom and became the ancestors of the Jewish People
The Passover come from how the Angel of Death flew over all the houses in Egypt and stopped all the firstborn children from dying - it was one of the 10 plagues that God had put on Egypt. It is usually celebrated around Easter Time.
