What is the Torah?

A

A torah is a scroll that is sacred to the Jewish people that contains the first five books of the Old Testament. It also contains the most important Jewish prayer called the Shema. The torah cannot be touched by anyone and can only be touched by a Yad.

A

An ark is at the back of a synagogue, and it has a little cabinet in it that has a curtain in front of it which contains the Torah scroll.

What is a Mezuzah?

A

A mezuzah is a cylinder-shaped container that Jewish people put on every door in the house but the bathroom in a tilted way. The mezuzah holds the Shema inside of it, which is the Jew’s most important prayer. When Jewish people sell their house to another Jewish person, they leave the Mezuzah up for the next JEWISH family.

What is a tallit?

A

A tallit is a towel/blanket/cape item that Jewish people put over themselves every day when it is time to pray. They can also put this over them to stay close to G-d, and Rabbis and Cantors put it over themselves to when they are leading a service.

A

A kippah is a small hat that sits on the back of a boy/man’s head when they finish their Batz Mitzvah to symbolise that G-d is up and always with them.

A

A yad is special (fancy) pointer that Rabbi uses to touch the torah with since the Torah cannot be touched by anyone’s hands or body parts.

A

A bimah is a raised platform where the rabbi and cantor stand to speak. The torah is also read on it when a service is being led.
