Outline the facts of Jesus’ baptism
Jesus was baptised by John in the Jordan, the spirit descended on him + a voice (God) said “you are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
John - baptising people - washing away sins
Why is Jesus’ baptism important
Chose to be baptised even though is sinless, shows Christian’s that they should be baptised too + receive Holy Spirit
Jesus receives Holy Spirit because God speaks to him
Marks start of his ministry
How did the temptation of Jesus begin
After Jesus was baptised, was led by Holy Spirit to wilderness where he fasted for 40 days. At the end the devil gave him 3 temptations
What was the first temptation of Jesus + significance of it today
He was tempted to give in to the desires of the body (food) but replied “man shall not live on bread alone”
Significant - he did not give in to physical desires, neither should Christians. It is why Christians do lent
What was the second temptation of Jesus + significance of it today
He was tempted to give in to the desire of power but said “worship the Lord your God and serve him only.”
Significance - Christian’s shouldn’t let power, work, money get in the way of faith
What was the third temptation + significance for today
Tempted to test the will of God but said “Do not put the Lord your God to the test”
Significance - Christian’s shouldn’t test God, they should have faith
How are the temptations of Jesus overall significant for today
- tells Christian’s that when they are tempted they should resist, like Jesus
- emphasises Jesus’ humanity, shows he was human and tempted. Shows Christian’s it is ok to be tempted
