Demand for affordable housing greatly exceeds supply and gov as well as private sector cannot cope with large pop.

Average income $4/day but it is irregular income, employment is insecure as residents can only offer unskilled labour
Significant amount of self employment e.g. selling food and second hand goods
Few health and safety precautions for factory workers
Toilets and groundwater
Very few homes have toilets and the few toilets in the slum are poorly built and run for profit. Toilets flush out into open sewers on the street.
Groundwater supplies are polluted because Jembatan Besi was a former waste tip.
Impacts of pollution on disease
Water borne diseases like cholera and typhood are common. Tropical climate puts people at risk of malaria. Elderly at risk of dehydration from diarrhoea.
