Chapter one
The story of the Door
- Utterson and Hyde are friends on a walk
- They talk about Hyde trampling a girl and how Hyde may be blackmailing the owner of the building
- They agree not to talk about it anymore
Chapter two
Search for Mr Hyde
- Utterson looks at Jekylls and finds it suspicous and decides to investigate
- He finds Hyde who is confrontational
- He meets Poole at Jekylls’ who says Hyde is rarely at the house
Chapter three
Dr Jekyll was quite at ease
- Utterson meets with Jekyll
- Jekyll begs him to help Hyde and carry out the will if he should disapear
- Jekyll becomes withdrawn when Hyde is mentioned
Chapter four
The Carew Murder Case
- Hyde murders Carew at night
- Utterson investagates at Hydes house
Chapter five
Incident of the Letter
- Jekyll becomes withdrawn and Utterson suspects he is covering for Hyde
- Jekyll gives Utterson a letter and Hydes and his handwritting are the same
Chapter six
Remarkable Incident of Dr Lanyon
- Layon becomes ill and dies of shock
- Lanyon sends Utterson a letter that is not to be opened till Jekylls death
Chapter seven
Incident at the Window
- Enfield and Utterson discuss there concerns for Jekyll on a walk
- They see Jekyll in the window but he disappears sudenly with an expression of fear
Chapter eight
The Last Night
- Poole visits Utterson because he believes that Hyde has murded Jekyll and Hyde is still at the house
- Its cold and windy when they break down the door
- They find Hyde who has poisoned himself and a letter from Jekyll to Utterson
Chapter nine
Dr Lanyon’s Narrative
- The novel becomes first person from Lanyons perspective
- He includes Jekylls plea for help
- Lanyon collects the chemicals and gives them to Mr Hyde
- Hyde transforms into Jekyll before his eyes
- Lanyon is horrifed by this discovery
Chapter ten
Henry Jekyll’s Full Statement of the Case
- From Jekylls perspective
- He explains how:
- Hyde was created to separate the Good and Bad in him
- Hyde became more powerfull than Jekyll so he could not controll his changing anymore
- Jekyll has run out of drugs so after he becomes Hyde he will not be able to change back to Jekyll again
- He ends with “I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end”
Dr Jekyll
- He is the model of a victorian gentleman (rich, professional, sensible)
- He becomes mysterious as through his connection with Hyde (his opposite) and his ambiguaty around Hyde
- Jekyll behaviour becomes increasingly strange and isolating
- Layon views him as a mad scienist
- Stevenson uses Jekyll to comment of societal hypocracy
Mr Hyde
- Hyde is evil, deformed and violent and Jekylls oppostie by creation
- He is how Jekyll expresses his darker side (violence, drugs, sex)
- His name is a Homophone
- Described as animalistic and feral and often surrounded by fog or darkness
- Stevenson uses him to dismantle victorian ideas about respectablity
- He represents the irrational
Mr Utterson
- A lawyer who is serious and professional, a stereotypical Victorian Gentleman
- He represents rationality
- He takes on the role of an inspector to try and help his friends
- He is the protagonist and reveals information to the reader
Dr Lanyon
- He is a respectable and sensible doctor
- He used to work with Jekyll but they parted after Jekyll’s experiments
- He dies of shock after finding out Jekylls secret
