Jekyll and Hyde can be summed up in one quote…
‘Man is not truly one, but truly two.’
Jekyll and Hyde is an exploration of the nature of humanity and the hypocrisy and ignorance of Victorian society. Stevenson is heavily critical of the ‘Victorian gentlemen’ and the hypocritical way of life that these men projected in Victorian society.
It is also an exploration of the human psyche and the true nature/desires of humanity as a species.
Mr Enfield - ‘I was coming home from some place at the end of the world, about three o’clock of a black winter morning’
This quote shows the theme of secrecy, as Mr Enfield shouldn’t be out at that late at night as he is a respectable Victorian gentleman

This quote shows how Hyde’s actions have an affect on Mr Enfield as he knows what Hyde is capable of.
