Who are the main characters in JandH?
Dr Henry Jekyll, Mr Hyde, Mr Utterson, Mr Enfield, Mr Poole and Dr Lanyon
What is “duality of man”?
The idea that there’s two sides to everyone. One good and one bad.
How did the author incorporate his time at the Hospital into JandH?
He included ideas that drugs, powders ect. Can release a different side of us and reveal things. He also included ideas about dreams and sub-conscious thoughts.
How could a duality of man concept play into the authors life?
The book JandH made him a superstar in Britain and America but it cost him his reputation. (i.e. there are two sides to his action)
How did Victorian Society treat disfigured people?
How is this reflected in JandH?
They thought that disfigured people were ‘evil’. In JandH, Mr Hyde is disfigured and deformed and is clearly a despicable, evil character.
How could drug use be linked into JandH?
Dr Jekyll takes a drug to become Mr Hyde. Considering Mr Hyde is evil, perhaps there could be a an anti drug message
What does Mr Hyde do to a young girl?
He “tramples” her.
When Mr Hyde is demanded to pay for the girls injury, what does he do?
He goes into his warehouse and comes out with 10 pounds and a cheque for 90 pounds.
What is suspicious about Dr Jekyll’s Will?
All of his assets are signed to go to Mr Hyde if Jekyll dies or disappears.
When Mr Utterson goes to Dr Lanyon, what does he find about Dr Jekyll and Mr Lanyon.
That they have fallen out over Dr Jekyll’s research.
How does Utterson feel when he sees Mr Hyde’s face?
Utterson feels horrified.
Who is Mr Poole?
Mr Poole is Jekyll’s butler.
What have Dr Jekyll’s servants been told to do?
Follow Mr Hyde’s orders and give him access to the laboratory.
What does Mr Hyde do to a man in chapter 4 and who is he?
What happened that caused this event?
He beats a man to death and he’s a member of Parliament.
Dr Jekyll took the potion and an angry Mr Hyde took his anger out on the man.
After Hyde is ‘gone’ in Chapter 6, what happens to Dr Jekyll and why does it happen?
His health improves dramatically and as a result, he hosts a party.
This is because he stopped taking the potion after he murdered the man.
After the party in Chapter 6, what happens to Jekyll?
Utterson can’t reach Jekyll anymore and Poole says that his “master isn’t receiving any guests”.
What happened to Lanyon after the party in chapter 6?
Lanyon becomes very ill and is on his deathbed. He refuses to talk about Jekyll and says that he’ll figure everything out after he dies.
When on another walk in chapter 7, who do Mr Utterson and Mr Lanyon see?
They see Dr Jekyll getting some fresh air and looking deathly ill. They ask him if he wants to go on a walk but he becomes scared all of a sudden and runs into his house.
In chapter 8, why does Poole get Utterson?
There is a man in the lab and it’s not Dr Jekyll. Poole says he looked like Mr Hyde.
What was the voice telling Poole to do?
Find a specific chemical / ingredient for a cure.
When they force their way into the lab what do they find?
Mr Hyde dead on the floor wearing Jekyll’s clothes, a huge mirror and three documents.
What are the three documents they find?
1) A will saying that Mr Utterson can have the estate.
2) A note saying that Mr Utterson needs to read the letter from Lanyon (CHAPTER 9)
3) A sealed envelope (CHAPTER 10)
How is Dr Lanyon involved / what does the letter say?
Lanyon was instructed to break into Jekyll’s laboratory and get specific ingredients for Mr Hyde.
He arrives and makes a potion. He asks if Lanyon wants to see this and he says yes.
Hyde drinks the glass and transforms into Dr Jekyll.
What is in the sealed envelope?
Dr Jekyll’s detailed confession.
How did Dr Jekyll first find becoming Mr Hyde
“exhilarating and liberating”
What happened that scared Dr Jekyll?
He turned into Hyde without intention and realised he could permanently become Mr Hyde. After this he plans to stop taking the potion.
