Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution
Charles Darwin came up with the idea that we evolved from apes and that we are distant ancestors of them. This profoundly challenged religion at the time as they strongly opposed of it so being compared to one of them was a huge insult. It was a new scientific discovery which was obviously against traditional religious beliefs ( Like god designing human beings). It can also suggest why people were so repulsed by seeing him as they could recognise distant ancestors within themselves and his primitive looks manifested it
What is physiognomy?
In the victorian era, criminology was much more evident in particular scientists. Many believed in physiognomy where you would judge someone’s personality solely based upon their looks alone and it is connected with crime. Anyone who looked at hyde would be simply revolted which insinuates that he’s a criminal
