Jealousy motivating behaviour Flashcards
I shall be no more….
Eve jealous of adam: the idea that he may have another wife: “I shall be no more, and adam wedded to another Eve…A death to think. Confirmed then I resolve, Adam shall share with me in bliss or woe”. Lexical term “shall” C.S Lewis calls this “murder”. This post marital jealousy suggested with Corvino “hotblooded italian” (Orthello quote here)
Jealousy spurs character downfall
“ply their growing…
Unlike the equal and happy unfallen marriage of adam and eve who “ply their growing work…the hands dispatch of two gardening so wide”. “roses intermixed with myrtle” (myrtle sign of faithful marriage).
Corvino jealousy led to Celia downfall as man . “more hell, more horror, more wild, remorseless rage shall seize thee” (h sounds, and tricolon). Form: draws his dagger. Book 10 “to thy husbands thine shall submit”.
More hell, more…
Corvino jealousy led to Celia downfall as man . “more hell, more horror, more wild, remorseless rage shall seize thee” (h sounds, and tricolon). Form: draws his dagger. Book 10 “to thy husbands thine shall submit”.
Book 10
“To thy husbands will thine shall submit”
“high winds worse…
“high winds worse within began to rise, high passions, anger, hate, mistrust, suspicion…”
which they expect…
Volpones ‘wealth’ “makes men observe me”. They become greedy. “which they expect each greedy minute” hypocritical comment.
Jealousy as a component to greed
malicious foe
Adam and eve were warned by Rafael of a “malicious foe envying our happiness…seeks to work us woe and shame by sly assault; and somewhere nigh at hand watches, no doubt, with greedy hope”.
jealous of Gods creation leads to greed for revenge “spite with spite is best repaid”. Inversion of values (like Volpone ‘punishing’ the three men.
Boon 4 pin’d with
“pin’d with vain desire”
Eve accepts the flatters of satan. She is jealous of adam? Eve is jealous but can we blame her? she clearly had these desires before the fall so must we condemn god for giving her the ability of such characteristics? we cannot condemn eve with out rebuking God
Adam shall share
Adam shall share with me in bliss or woe
almost ironic: Eve’s motivation was out of jealousy of another eve. Thus the term “share” has a malicious effect as it is suggesting her generosity in including Adam.
{draws his
draws his dagger
Being a play, the brutal result of Corvino’s jealousy is greatly enhanced as we see the physical effect. Paradise lost is limited due to it being in the form of an epic poem.
CRITIC women secondness
Milton tells “the story of woman’s secondness, her otherness, and how that otherness leads inexorably to her demonic anger, her sin, her fall” Sandra M Gilbert
” and render in me
“and render in me more equal, and perhaps a thing not undersirable, sometime superior; for inferior who is free?”
Eve has been made to feel inferior: condemn god? “justify the ways of god to man” can we justify his planting of vain and jealous emotions in eve even before she has fallen?
War of the theatre
Jonson thinks theatre should elevate morals. “war of the theatre” – you should have to write with moral purpose. Social job of the poets. Jonson adapted the Roman classical comedies by condemning the characters at the end.
Jonson trying to be moral compass (ironic considering criminal history of man slaughter), Milton “justify the ways of God to man” - suggesting he also sees himself as a moral spokesperson.
published his plays as ‘the works’ – scornful because like classical “works”; arrogant
PL “bent on
Downfall of adam and eve. Satans jealousy. “bent on man’s distruction” due to his feelings of “tourment” in seeing “sweet interchange of hill and valley”. “all good to me becomes bane” Jealous behavior. Thinks god created adam and eve “to spite us more”
