Q

Signs at the start of the play of Othello’s insecurities
Rude am i in speech

A

-prefaces he is “rude am i in speech”
ironic conspicuous lack of rudeness in Othello’s oration =incredibly eloquent almost poetic speaker. Shows how Othello is self conscious he feels as a moor=outsider=this leads to him feeling Cassio is a better suitor for D so cant understand why she is with him

Q

Evidence that Iago’s manipulation has worked on Othello
for i am black and for i am declined

A

“For i am black” and “for i am declined”
implied contrasts between himself and Desdemona which previously marked a humanistic triumph in Othello and Desdemona’s marriage -reframed as shameful comparative points =self doubt=insecurities in relationship due to Iago’s “pestilence”
ironic as Desdemona loves Othello for his older more mature self
Jealousy of Michael Cassio
FORESHAODWS O DECLINE
