What is a secondary 7th chord?
A 7th chord on any degree of the scale except the dominant (V)
What is tritone substitution?
Swapping a chord for the chord 3 tones above it
What is a smear?
Aggressively smudging a pitch
What is a rip?
A rapid, ascending slide to a note
What is a spill/fall-off?
A descending pitch slide
How is a pitch bend achieved?
Through bending a string
What is standard song form?
AABA (each section is approximately 8 bars long)
What is a head?
The first section of main chord changes
What is a chorus?
A repetition of the ‘head’ section
What is fours?
Dialogue between soloists- often 4 bar sections each
What is a heterophonic texture?
Slightly different layers of sound being played together
What is growl/talking trumpet?
An aggressive timbre, imitating animals e.g. elephants
What is a rim-shot?
Hitting both the rim of the snare and the drum itself, creating a very loud sound
What is a harmon mute?
inserted into the end of the instrument, altering its timbre
What is a wah-wah mute?
(also called a plunger mute) held over the end of the trumpet; adjust to vary the timbres produced
