Accompaniment
performing with another performer(s), usually in a less prominent role.
Arco
The technique of playing upright bass with a bow.
Ballad
A simple song, usually romantic nature
Bass
Looks like a very long violin, played by plucking the strings or by bowing
Big Band
an ensemble of 10 or more players
Blue Note
Note in the blues scale. like the lowered 3rd, 5th and 7th. In the c blues scale. Eb, Gb, Bb are all considered to be in the blue note.
Bridge
Name given to the third eight bar section. In the most common form, AABA also known as the B section in AABA.
Call and response
A musical pattern - related to African American and jazz music, usually followed by a solo singer or instruments followed by an ensemble.
Chord
The simultaneous sounding of three or more tones.
Chord changes
A series of successive chords also called chord progression.
Chorus (pop song)
the main body of a song as distinct from the verses which comes first.
Chorus (jazz song)
the form of the tune
Collective improvisation
A situation where all members of a small group improvise simultaneously.
Combo
A small instrumental group consisting of 3 to 7 players
comping
the rhythmic pattern used by a keyboard or guitar as they accompany soloists to accompany or compliment.
Contrast
The introduction of new material
Double-time feel
the music gives you a sense of moving twice as fast.
Ensemble
A collection of various instruments that will vary in size.
Form
denotes the order of things to come. (12 bar blues, 32 bar AABA)
Front line
musicians appearing directly Infront of the audience and in front of the rhythmic section.
Harmony
Musical combination of tones and cords or fundamental chords to a key
Head Arrangement
A band arrangement that was created extemporaneously by the musicians and is NOT written down.
Hit-Hat
2 cymbals on a stand controlled by the left foot and played with sticks
Hora
General label for any wind instrument
Intonation
to match a patch ( tune in or tune out)
Improvisation
Simultaneously perform and compose
Jam-session
A musical get-together where improvisation is stressed, and prewritten music is rare
Laid back
an adjective used to describe a feeling of relaxation, slowness, or laziness when a performer plays the music a little later thane expected
lick
A phrase or a fragment of music
Measure/bar
unit of time or metric unit in a composition.
Meter
time signature, it indicates how many beats are in each bar.
Pizzicato
Manner playing the bass; plucking the string rather than bowing.
Repetition
presentation of the same musical in two or more of a composition.
Rhythm Section
Focus on accompanying. Piano, guitar, bass, drum
Rhythm
Arrangement of sound in time it encompasses beat, tempo, and meter.
Ride-cymbal
the cymbal suspended over a drum set, usually to the players right played with the stick. Used for playing time.
Ride rhythm
The pattern of the drummer pkayes on the right cymbal to keep time.
Riff
A short pattern of sounds repeated and played by the soloist or group.
scat singing
the use of nonsense syllables while improvising vocally
stop time
when the accompany stops or breaks up existing time.
Swing
feeling projected by jazz performance
syncopation
accenting a normally weak beat or the weak part of the beat.
Tempo
speed of the underlying beat. speed is determined by the number of beats counted over the span of 60 seconds.
Two-feel
A rhythm section style that emphasis the 1st and 3rd beats measure, often leaving the 2nd and 4th beats silent in the bass; sometimes called boom-chick style
Vibrato
The pulsating effect produced by small, rapid vibrations in pitch. Most jazz uses vibrato for warmth and interpretation in intimidating the human voice.
walking bass
spells out the notes in the chords, being used and is usually played in eight notes.
Swing time
played on ALL 4 quarter notes.
