A
Increase (accumulation) of bilirubin in the tissues

Increased rate of breakdown of red blood cells

Due to the impaired ability of the liver to process (conjugate) bilirubin or secrete it

Due to the obstruction of bile flow between the liver and intestine

Bilirubin crossing the blood brain barrier.
Causes damage to neurons in the brain
