Q

You are troubleshooting an issue with a network cable. You find that the wires in the cable don’t connect to the proper location on the jack. What is the name given to this type of issue? Explain.

A

Wire Map Problem - when the wires on a cable and a jack/plug don’t match up. Wire map problems are commonly caused by improper crimping.

Q

Which layer is Layer 3 of the OSI Model and what does it do?

A

Layer 3 is the Network Layer. It deals with how we forward traffic (routing) w/ a logical address (IPv4 or IPv6).

Q

What’s important to remember about multiplexing?

A

It involves taking some limited amount of resource and using it more efficiently. So, multiple people can use a baseband connection at the same time.

Q

What’s a token ring?

A

Ring topology that uses an electronic token to prevent collisions by requiring a device to hold the “token” when communicating on the network. It allows them to take turns.

Q

What’s a MAC? Breakdown a Mac Address

A

MAC - physical addressing system that uses a 48-bit address assigned to a NIC by manufacturers.

The first 6 correspond to the particular vendor that made that card. Second half represents the exact machine it belongs to.

Q

What was implemented to provide redundancy on a ring topology network?

A

FDDI rings - they use two counter-rotating rings for redundancy. If one ring is broken, the other takes over the network load.
