What is Hiragana?
One of the Japanese writing systems. Hira or hiragana means flowing (it is a cursive script). It is the first Japanese script that people learn.

What is Katakana?
One of the Japanese writing systems. A more angular Japanese script which is often used for loanwords, for emphasis, onomatopoeia, scientific/technica. terms and companies e.g. Toyota, UNIQLO.

What is Kanji?
One of the Japanes writing systems. Kanji are derived from Chinese characters. Some Kanji have more than one pronounciation.

What is Roomaji?
The phonetic guide for Japanese written with the English alphabet. Roomaji means Roman characters.

Roomaji is the words on the bottom of the characters.
What are Grammatical Particles?
Particles are short words (or single syllables) that indicate relationships between words in a sentence. Not all languages have an equivalent concept

What is Politeness?
The ways in which a language is used to show consideration for the feelings of others and to uphold interpersonal relationships or to comply with the rules for what sociey or one’s culture.
Example
Ohaiyo Gozaimasu instead of Konichiwa.
What is Metalanguage?
The language used to describe and discuss language.
Example
The language of grammar.
What is Script?
The written characters/writing system used for a language.
Example
Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji, Roomaji
What is Syllable?
A syllable is a part of a word that contains a single vowel sound and that is pronounced as a unit.

What is Syntax/Word Order?
Syntax is the order or arrangement of words and phrases to form proper sentences. The most basic syntax follows a subject + verb + direct object formula.
