Japanese nationalism emerged in the middle of the nineteenth century, with the main motive of transforming Japan into a Western-style power
What was the Treaty of Kanagwa?
In 1853, American steamships arrived on the banks of Japan and asked Japan to open up to trade with them.
Consequently, Japan signed the Treaty of Kanagwa.
What was the significance of the Treaty of Kanagwa?
Due to the Treaty, the power was returned to the emperor, who became known as the “Meiji”.
This is significant because the Meiji government promoted nationalism and militarism.
Under the Meiji government, military reforms took place and Japan signed a treaty with the British.
