A native Japanese religion meaning “way of the gods,” and focuses on worshiping nature and ancestor gods.

Feudalism
A social and economic system in which peasant farmers worked land for a landowner (daimyo), and by paying a price and giving their loyalty, they were protected by the owner’s samurai.
samurai
loyal warriors who lived according to a demanding code of behavior called bushido.
bushido
the “way of the warrior” a samurai was expected to show reckless courage, reverence for the gods, fairness, and generosity toward those weaker than himself.
daimyo
Territorial lords who protected those loyal to them with a private army of samurai. Under this system, security came from the daimyo.
kabuki
Dramas in which actors in elaborate costumes using music, dance, and mime, performed skits about urban life.
haikus
a type of poetry that does not express ideas but presents images.
