Vaccine - what vaccines are available
Give vaccine at least 1 week before travel
1) Imojev - LIVE ATTENUATED:
SINGLE dose - adults can consider having booster in 5 years (but not necessary)
2 doses 1-2 years apart for 9 mo - 18yo
NOT for <9 months old, pregnant/breastfeeding, immunocompromised, contraindication for LIVE vaccine
2) JEspect - ATTENUATED TWO doses 28 days apart (can have 2 doses 7 days apart) Booster dose 1 year later (Booster gives protection for 2 years)
Can be given from 2 months old
<3yo - give half dose - 0.25mL
Acceptable for pregnancy/breastfeeding
JE prevention
Avoid being outdoors during NIGHT (dusk to dawn)
Advise vaccination for those spending >1 month in endemic areas
If
JE transmission
Flavivirus transmitted via vector Culex mosquitoes
Humans are incidental/dead-end hosts, i.e no human-human or human-mosquito transmission

-Incubation: 5-15 days from infection to symptoms of illness
-Symptoms:
Headache, fever, vomiting
Mental status changes, neurologic symptoms, weakness, and movement disorders might develop over the next few days.
Seizures common in children
If develop encephalitis, 20-30% mortality
