Shinto
A native Japanese religion meaning “way of the gods,” and focuses on worshiping nature and ancestor gods.
Etiquette
A code of correct behavior and appearance, was also extremely important.
Feudalism
A social and economic system in which peasant farmers worked land for a landowner (daimyo), and by paying a price and giving their loyalty, they were protected by the owner’s samurai
Samurai
Loyal warriors who lived according to a demanding code of behavior called Bushido.
Bushido
The “way of the warrior” a samurai was expected to show reckless courage, reverence for the gods, fairness, and generosity toward those weaker than himself.
Daimyo
Territorial lords who protected those loyal to them with a private army of samurai.
Kabuki
Actors in elaborate costumes using music, dance, and mime, performed skits about urban life.
Haiku
A type of poetry that does not express ideas but presents images.
