How would you describe form:
(3D)
accurate form
=photorealistic style
light source coming from the right =create their reflections transparency to their form.
tone and detailed highlights and reflection are seen throughout the glass and lids
=3d form
How would you describe pattern
(leads eye?)
The subject matter of the bottles follow a pattern as the same object is repeated within the artwork. This leads your eye around the composition.
The mechanism in the bottle almost splits the image into thirds as it is repeated and draws your eye up and down the image.
How would you describe Mood and Atmosphere
(natural)
fresh cool blue, grey colours give the painting a summery feel.
The dazzling reflective surfaces of the glass, liquid and metal also create brightness to the painting as if painted in the strong summer sun.
The way the objects appear to be placed within the still life make it look simple but also create a natural mood and atmosphere as if the objects always sit like this waiting to be picked up and used.
How would you describe media handling and techniques
(fine and accurate brushstrokes) L
builds up paints
fine and accurate brushstrokes
create this photorealistic technique.
paints are applied smoothly in layers to create this effect;
seen clearly on the glass bottles where she captures both the reflective qualities of the glass and the liquid contained within them.
light source from the right
emphasis their transparency
paint smoothly and in accurate colours
create the glass like shiny smooth quality of each object as well as the metallic lids and liquid content.
Photographic Likeness
How would you describe the STYLE of Janet Fish (photorealism, smooth brushstrokes) L
Photorealism = make objects look as real as possible
painting in smooth, blended brushstrokes
create the appearance of the objects she is painting
can be seen in all of the subject matter.
strong light sources and reflective surfaces and objects
help capture
natural daylight coming from the right lights up and illuminates each bottle to emphasise her photorealist style.
How would you describe the COMPOSITION of Janet Fish (mention centre bottle) L
simple but deliberately arranged
fill the canvas and sit on a plain white background
limited depth to the painting because of the lack of background but draws in our full attention as the bottles take up all of the canvas and do not bleed off the edges.
centre bottle subtly becomes the main focus of the piece because it sits slightly in front of the bottles on either side.
Centre bottle = only one with a spray lid
less liquid inside and so shows a glistening surface to the ellipse of the liquid, this helps to add detail and interest to the centre bottle, drawing our attention to it first.
How would you describe the SUBJECT MATTER of the painting?
3 glass bottles that contain cleaning fluid used for glass.
her use of immaculate detail and sharp reflections, she has created a beautiful painting of mundane objects that we would normally find under a kitchen sink.
created light and reflections right across the canvas;
two back bottles through the central one which emphasises the close link they have with each other.
