SCLC
Southern Christian Leadership Conference - A group led by Martin Luther King Jr, to inform fellow African Americans about changes in the Civil Rights Movement.
Twenty-Fourth Amendment
An amendment that prohibited Congress and states preventing someone voting based on race.
Voting Rights Act of 1965
An act created to end the discriminatory voting practices adopted by many southern states.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
An act created to end racial, religious, and sex discrimination by employers.
Sit-in
A form of nonviolent protest where a person sits and refuses to leave.
Boycott
A form of nonviolent protest where a group of people do not interact with a commercial organization for a cause.
Jim Crow Laws
Laws created to promote the segregation of blacks from whites.
Brown vs Board of Education
A court case that declared state school segregation laws unconstitutional.
Little Rock Nine
A group of nine African American students who first integrated to a public school in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Montgomery Bus Boycott
A boycott of the Montgomery, Alabama public bus system to protest its segregation policy.
Freedom Rides
Rides in which African Americans would ride into the segregated, southern United States to challenge the non-enforcement of Supreme Court rulings.
Lyndon Johnson
The 36th President who signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Black Power
A movement inspired by Malcom X that supposed the rights and political power of African Americans.

The act of separating people by race.
Integration
The ending of segregation.
