jack quotes Flashcards
‘The boy who controlled them was dressed in the same way though his cap badge was golden.’
Almost identical to them but different with his badge being golden signifying his superiority to the other choir boys. Gold is 1st place but silver is 2nd making him seem better. Controlled not lead.
‘…he shouted an order and they halted,’
He shouted not beckoned. - halted like an army not schoolchildren, order like a troop or army. ‘He’ and ‘they’ as he is a singular but they are ne large group all under his reign.
‘the fair-haired boy … did not seem to satisfy him.’
Was not satisfied by Ralph from the beginning and did not like him even before he knew his name. Did not ‘seem’ which makes him hide his dissatisfaction cleverly.
“I ought to be chief,” said Jack with simple arrogance,’
Simple arrogance like it is normal and not odd. Ought not should like he is confident. ‘said’ not shouted makes him seem even more confident and proud.
“…you’re a lot of cry-babies and sissies.’
demeaning and rude words towards the littluns who are still very young and should be expected to cry. Probably scared of Jack as a more mature figure.
“If there was a beast I’d have seen it.’
confident in himself and doesn’t doubt himself when speaking to the others. Doesn’t believe there is a beast ‘If’. Use of ‘I’ instead of we - believes in himself.
“Bollocks to the rules!”
‘Bollocks’ is rude word and he had not sworn before. The rules that he also agreed with at the start. The rules affect everyone else but him.
“If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat–!”
emphasis of the word beat show his aggression starting and how he is so confident that he would manage to hunt down the beast and manage to beat it multiple times. ‘We’ is more inclusive and at this point in the story they are not fully divided tribes yet.
