boy - noun, shows the youth of jack, juxtaposes the power he holds over others his own age, one having power over many
controlled - verb, jack has power, jack directs the boys, jack gives the boys a purpose, superiority, has power to oppress them like a tyrant, reduces the other boys to objects to be controlled to his will
them - possessive pronoun, choirboys are not named, insignificant to jack and other boys, jack at rhe beginning makes people lose their identity in the choirboy crowd, jack at the end makes people lose their identity in the savage mob

shouted - imperative verb, intimidating and forceful, restrictive. uses methods an adult would use to a child to make them behave
order - show tyrannical side of leadership, expects to be listened to and obeyed, entitled to obedience
gasping, sweating, swaying - verb phrase, list of three, we see desperation within his fellow peers, verbs that show struggling
“…understand the enormity of the downward stroke”
understand - verb, comprehension of violent actions, consequences that would be given in society
enormity - adjective, weight of his actions, his guilt, reminder of morally wrong actions
downward stroke - verb phrase, does not explicitly say the weapon or the murder about to take place, vague but enough to make boys realise the seriousness of actions
stroke - verb, gentle, juxtaposes the action of murder which is violent, graphic and haunting
“the complusion to track down and kill was swallowing him up”
compulsion - noun, desire, irresistible urge within him, longing temptation to commit irredeemable acts
track down and kill - verb phrase, undercover officers in war would track down and kill, savages also track down and kill, proves goldings theory; we have a sick side that gives us these urges. jack is just a boy yet feels this
swallowing - verb, being eaten, engulf and overwhelms him, jack has instincts that say if he does not kill, he will be killed himself, survival of the fittest
“liberated from shame and self-consciousness”
liberated - verb, freed, golding says societal rules have shackled us, jack has become freed
shame and self-consciousness - sibilance, abstract noun, could be spat to show the disdain of the two nouns
self-consciousness - noun, shows the power anonymity has upon people, shows this new person for jack means violence without consequence, losing his sense of self (therefore changing from beginning)- MEI is spreading!
“the mask compelled them”
mask - noun, inanimate object, loss of identity for jack, in tribes masks are a symbol of power, gods, jack embraces this and habours more authority
compelled - verb, urged them on, temptation of mei is strong, it controls samneric, jacks power reins/lures them in
mei is spreading!
“proudly, and yet twitched as he said it”
proudly - adverb, shows pride, arrogance and enthusiasm at killing a pig. shows boastful nature compared to chap 1 after hesitation, discovers there are no consequences for killing
yet twitched - oxymoronic, displays discomfort, involuntary movement, spasm/adrenaline from first kill still affects him
shows his consciousness still can differentiate between right and wrong
“jack was on top of the sow, stabbing downwards”
on top - preposition, describes physical dominance and natural hierarchy
stabbing - verb, continuous and repetitive movement, violent and graphic, readers see difference because he is not hesitating any more but readily violent, descent into mindless violence
downwards - preposition, further proves dominance and forcing sow into submission
“painted and garlanded, like an idol”
“the Chief”
painted and garlanded - adjectives, describe tribal festivities and celebrations, jack is to be celebrated
like an idol - simile, idols are meant to be worshipped and praised, jack is above others, he has become god-like and entitled and superior
Chief - noun, capital C, loss of identity, ultimate leader, referred to as a tribal leader. supeior to ralph in every way, just better.
“mankind’s essential illness”
mankinds - noun, collective, belongs to and is within everyone even young children
essential - adjective, it is necessary, for life? has maintained our species over billions of years and is a vital part of man as a whole
illness - noun, it is negative, it spreads quickly and corrupts, disease imagery
