What is shabbat?
Shabbat is the day of rest in judaism a symbol of Gods day of rest on the 7th day after the account in Genesis 1
When does shabbat begin ?
It begins at sunset on Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday
What is Shabbat specifically commanded in ?
It is the only holy day specifically commanded in the 10 commandments
What preparations are done for shabbat ?
- before shabbat the home is cleaned and all of the food is prepared
- no work should be done during Shabbat
- some jews may attend a short service in the synagogue before the main Friday evening shabbat rituals
Lighting the candles
- A member of the family usually the mother, 18 minutes before sunset lights the candles and welcomes shabbat
- She says a blessing and prays asking God to bless her family during Shabbat
Friday meal
-The father of the household blesses the children and recites the kiddush
-everyone washes their hands as a act of purification
-head of the household uncovers the challah bread and says a blessing, the bread is cut and dipped in salt and passed around
-The meal begins and their might be scripture stories told to children adn hymns sung
- The meal ends with prayers of thanksgiving
What is Kiddush?
Kiddush is a shabbat blessing done over wine
Shabbat in the synagogue
- up to 5 services can happen
- kabbalat shabbat- welcoming the shabbat
- 4 ususal synagogue services: Shacharit, Musaf, MIncha and Ma’ariv
- no intercession prayers and may include procession of Sefer torah
- often also a sermon from the rabbi
- Many jews only attend synagogue on Saturday morning
Work
-39 areas of work that are forbidden during Shabbat
-These rules were the interpretations of the rabbis and included in the Mishnah
-They were mentioned in the talmud
- 35 restrictions were about farming or other kind of physical work
- 2 rules are about starting fire are now focused on electrical goods or not burning fuel
