Enter vessel from the cells
Uses cerebral edema, low sodium, alkalosis, hypovolemia
HypErtonic solution
Stays where I put it
Used with blood products
Replaces fluid loss and use for fluid maintenance
Isotonic solution
Out of the vessel, and into the cell
Uses intracellular, dehydration, helps kidney excrete excess fluids
HypOtonic solution
Tachycardia, chest pain, hypotension, decreased, LOC, cyanosis
Air embolism
Pain, swelling, coolness, numbness at the site. No blood return.
Infiltration
Tachycardia, redness, swelling, chills, and fever, malaise, nausea, and vomiting.
Infection
Increased BP, distended neck veins (JVD), dyspnea, wet, cough, and crackles.
Circulatory overload
Heat, redness, tenderness at the site. Decreased flow of IV.
Phlebitis
Eccymosis , blood, hard and painful lump at the site.
Hematoma
