Define Sedation
A technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which communication can be maintained and the modification of the patients state of mind is such that the patient will respond to command throughout the period of sedation.
Why is it so. Important to take a good drug history at sedation assessment
Almost all drugs increase the sedative effect of midazolam
With regards to ASA classification what would this patient be scarred as
Patient is a smoker with well controlled epilepsy, is a non insulin dependant diabetic and the patients BMI is 32
ASA II - mild systemic disease
Patient presents to IV sedation assessment, when taking history you find that the patient is an insulin dependant diabetic, they have stable angina and there BMI is over 40.
Would you treat this pt in primary care and why?
No because this patient would be deemed ASA III which should not be treated in primary care
What are the two ASA classifications that can be treated in primary care
ASA I and II
