A

Rapid: NovoRapid, Humalog
Short: Novolin ge Toronto
Intermediate: Humulin N, Novolin ge NPH
Long: Lantus, Levemir

Intradermal

Intradermal = 0.1 mL
Subcutaneous = 2.5mL
Intramuscular:
- deltoid (children>1yr = 1mL, adults = 2mL)
- vastus lateralis (infants, birth to 1 yr = 0.5mL; children 1-2yr = 1mL; children 2-12 = 2mL; adults = 5mL)
- ventrogluteal (not immunizations; infants > 7 months = 1mL; children 1-2yrs = 2mL; children 3 and older = 3mL; >12yrs and adults = 5mL)

Can you mix short or rapid with intermediate insulins? Describe the procedure for doing this.

A

Yes.

1) Clear, then cloudy
2) inject air into cloudy (intermediate) insulin
3) inject air into clear (short or rapid) insulin, withdraw required volume
4) withdraw cloudy insulin
5) double check total voume
