IV CH 1 Flashcards
Basic Cell Bio
Lipid
fats- combine hydrogen, carbon, and oxygen. doesn’t dissolve in water. stored as high energy
hydrophobic
repelled by water
hydrophilic
attracted to or soluble in water
glucose
six-carbon (blood) sugar, used for energy in cells
diabetes
high blood sugar levels not utilized properly. requires treatment to lower sugar levels
glycogen
starch polysaccharide, used to store energy.
proteins
make up 50% of dry weight in animals
enzymes
protein molecules that speed up chemical reactions
antibodies
infection fighting proteins. vets count amount in blood to determine what organism is causing sickness in their patients
exocytosis
moving of the proteins to the outside of the cell membrane
metabolism
all reactions going on in the cell
anabolism
one of the two main types of metabolism: smaller molecules are combined into larger ones
catabolism
one of the types of metabolism: large molecules broken into smaller molecules
homeostasis
maintenance of ECF (liquid around living cells) & normal concentration of molecules
diffusion
molecules move from higher to lower concentrations, continues until concentrations are equalized
