IT Infrastructure Flashcards
What is the purpose of a Modem?
- Connects a network to an internet service provider (usually through a cable connection)
- Brings internet in a home or office
- Receives analog signals from the internet service provider and translates those signals into digital signals.
What is the purpose of a Router?
- Manage network traffic by connecting devices to form a network
- Reads the source and destination fields in information packet header to determine the most efficient path through the network for the packet to travel
- Act as a link between a modem and organization switches
- If no switches, then the router will connect to a users device
What is the purpose of Switches
- Similar to routers in that they connect and divide devices
- They do not perform a many advanced functions as a router such as assigning IP address
What is the purpose of a Gateway
A gateway is a computer or device that acts as an intermediary between different networks.
A gateway transforms data from one protocol (set of rules that govern how information is transmitted) into another so that information can flow between networks.
It interprets the differing protocols and converts them into a format that facilitates network movement between a company’s network and the internet.
Edge-Enable Devices
Allow computing, storage, and networking functions to be closer to the devices where the data or system request originates. Benefits include faster computing network response times.
What does a Server do?
Servers help coordinate computers, programs and data that part of the network.
Types include: web servers, file servers, print servers and database servers.
What are Firewalls
Firewalls are software applications or hardware devices that protect a person’s or a company’s network traffic by filtering it through security protocols with predefined rules.
Intended to prevent unauthorized access to the organization and prevent employees from downloading malicious software or accessing restricted sites
COSO Enterprise Risk Management
Name the five components
- Governance and Culture
- Strategy and Objective-Setting
- Performance
- Review and Revision
- Information, Communication and Reporting
COSO Enterprise Risk Management:
What is the objective of the Performance component?
The Performance component recommends that organizations prioritize their risks according to their own individualized risk appetites, while ensuring business objectives are met.
Coso ERM Framework:
What are the five supporting principles of the Performance component?
- Identifying Risk
- Assessing the severing of risks
- Prioritizing risk
- Implementing risk responses
- Developing a portfolio view of risk
Describe Cloud Computing
A model that uses shared resources over the internet to rent storage space, processing power, or proprietary software on remote serves from another company. Allows users and organizations to access applications and services on a real-time basis from services offered from data centers all over the world.
