hinzufügen
to add
“Hinzufügen” is used when you are adding something to an existing set, collection, or group. “Hinzufügen” implies adding something to something else.
“Hinzufügen” is a separable verb, so in the sentence structure, the prefix “hin” separates and is placed at the end of the sentence, and the main part of the verb (the verb stem) comes before the object.
For example:
“Ich füge den Artikel zur Sammlung hinzu.” (I’m adding the article to the collection.)
On the other hand, “fügen” alone generally means “to add” in a broader sense, without the implication of adding to something specific. It can also mean “to conform” or “to fit” in certain contexts.
For example:
“Ich füge Zucker zum Kaffee hinzu.” (I’m adding sugar to the coffee.)
