Server
A computer that responds to requests from across the network to provide, or help provide computing services.
Multi Processor Server
A server with two or more CPU’s within a single computer system
RAID
Redundant Array of Independent Disks. A storage technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit to act as one drive. Typically used to prevent data loss in case of drive failure.
HUB
A multi port repeater for network traffic that allows for communication between multiple computers (no longer used, they have been replaced by switches) Works good for 3 - 5 computers not high # of computers.
Switch
An intelligent multi-port repeater for network traffic that allows for communication between multiple computers simultaneously. Acts as the middle man, isolates conversation.
Router
A network device that transfers data packets between networks. Allows local data to stay local, exterior data to stay exterior.
Modem
A device that converts one communication technology to another
Firewall
A software or hardware based security solution that controls incoming and outgoing traffic to a computer or network
LAN
Local area network, a network that is connect with on premise hardware
WAN
Wide area network, a network that is connected via the internet (century link, comcast, etc.)
ISP -
Internet Service Provider, a business or organization that offers usser access to the internet and related services.
TCP/IP
transmission control protocol, defines how the data neets to be formatted to be transmitted over the internet. General language accepted world wide.
VPN
virtual private network, extends a private network across public network, such as the internet.
Client Server
A computing architecture where a client software running a workstation connects to a server to provide fully functional software product.
Thin Client
Used in Citrix Situation. A Computer or computer program which depends on some other computer to fulfill it’s role.
Remote processing
usually associated with thin client technology where the user may have an application open but the processing for that application is not happening on the local machine.
Remote Access Software
Allows the user to access company servers and data from remote offices.
