Isues Of Classification And Diagnosis Flashcards
What is validity in relation to schizophrenia?
Whether the psychiatrists can get the diagnosis right
What is reliability in relation to schizophrenia?
Whether 2 psychiatrists agree on a diagnosis
What are the 4 issues?
No objective test for Schizophrenia
Different diagnostic tools are used
Culture
Overlapping of symptoms with other disorders
What would an objective test achieve?
Would say whether you definitely do or don’t have the disorder
It would be a test which doesn’t just go on opinion
What is the issue with having no objective test for Schizophrenia? (AO1)
As a result of having no objective test, the diagnosis has to be made on the basis of a psychiatrists opinion.
The diagnosis is made trough reporting of symptoms by the individual.
Why is it an issue that there is no objective test for Schizophrenia? (AO2)
The results aren’t clear or definitive
Potential for bias-relying on psychiatrists opinion
If relying on patient telling their symptoms as a basis for the diagnosis they may over-exaggerate or ‘under-play’ symptoms
Can the individual accurately report symptoms to psychiatrists - can they explain complicated symptoms?
What is the impact of having no objective test for Schizophrenia? (AO2)
Psychiatrists may mis-diagnose so patient may get treatment when it’s not required if not get treatment when it is required
What are the 2 diagnostic tools used?
DSM
ICD
What are the 2 differences between the DSM and ICD? (AO1)
1-The DSM required symptoms to be shown for 6 months, ICD for 1 month
2-Differ in how they define sub-types e.g the DSM identifies 5, the ICD identifies 7
Why is it an issue that the DSM requires symptoms to be shown for 6 months, but the ICD for 1 month? (AO2)
May lead to unreliable diagnosis
DSM-6 months, symptoms would be more likely to be consistent, but is it leaving it too long for the symptoms to develop?
ICD-1 month so quicker treatment but 1 month may not be long enough to argue that they have Schizophrenia
What is the impact of the DSM requiring symptoms to be shown for 6 months, but the ICD for 1 month? (AO2)
By diagnosing someone, you can treat them quicker
DSM- if treat them too late, may be less effective
