Q

Sieber and Stanley 1988 identified 4 aspects in the scientific research process that raise ethical implications in ssr?

A

1) Formulation of the research question, researcher must consider question carefully to see if the damaging to members of a particular group
2) the methodology used, how research is carried out and how pps are used, right to confidentiality and anonomity
3) the institutional context, mindful of how data is going to be used and clvsider who is funding research
4) interpretar ion and application of findings = how findings interpreted used to inform policy

Q

In social psych

A

. Cultural issues in social psych can lead to racist comments and racism
. If one type of prejudice is seen as leading to prejudice than another such as multiculturalism as opposed to assimilation seen as criticising a particular country
. Issues about gender can be socially sensitive and findings have to be dealt with sensitively if they might upset individuals or groups
. Sherif study could be used to create more prejudice, may encourage discriminatory behaviour when resources are scarce
. Milgram, the importance of findings did justify the way the research was conducted as the research is useful in determining factors that affect obedience to authority
. However milgrams results could be used to ensure people obey orders including those they don’t wish to follow pps were deceived unable to provide fully informed consent, pps said they suffered no long term effects

Q

Cognitive

A

. Alzheimers and any other forms o
Dementia are very debilitating for someone and being diagnosed with memory problems at any age is distressing
. For example Sebastian and hernandez gil 2012 discuss the poor digit span for people with alzheimers and any other forms o dementia and indeed for older people in general. This can be a socially sensitive finding
. People with brain damage might benefit from knowing what the damage means but this needs to be dealt with sensitively. The findings of research do impact on others which means care needs to be taken in how society uses such findings
. Research into eye witness testimony has resulted in more accurate awareness of eye witnesses testimony has resulted in good working relationship between psychologist and legal profession to help improve the accuracy and validity of eye witness testimony

Q

Biological

A

. Case studies of brain damaged patients such as hm looks at brain functioning and structure so relate to biopsych. When studying someone in depth especially looking at something that went wrong for partcipants issues of sensitivity are likely to apply
. Similar issues apply when looking at heroin addiction. They can come to realise that they have what is called here brain damaged caused by re-exposure to heroin cues in the environment even after getting over their heroin addiction van den over et al 2008
. People can see where their agression might come from activity in the limbic system which might affect them
. Men can see how jealousy is driven by their nature

Q

Learning

A

. A society might want children to develop in an open and individual way whereas school can be seen as producing behaviour that suits social norms and shapes citizens to adhere to those specific norms
. Learning theories are used in therapies which is around shaping required behaviour. Sasz 1961 preffered the idea of people with schizophrenia being themselves and wrote a book called myth of mental illness criticising social control in the areas of diagnosis and treatment of those labelled mentally ill
. R. D laing et al 1965 also had existential ideas meaning he thought that people were all individual and focusing on the here and now is best rather than labels for people such as mentally ill
. Token economy can be used to make behaviour acceptable for society however manipulating the behaviour of people seem as unethical
. Focus on the fear responses and phobia
. If an individual is treated by flooding this traumatic lots of people have them so finding a way to remove them has pratical application
