Characteristics of Herzberg’s two factor theory

  1. consist of hygiene factors including job security and working conditions and motivational factors such as recognition and achievement.
  2. hygiene factors does not motivate but if not met would cause employees to be dissatisfied and unable to proceed to higher levels
  3. low level hygiene factors - extrinsic
  4. high levels motivating factors - intrinsic
  5. hygiene factors must be eliminated to achieve motivation.
  6. for motivation to occur, both hygiene and motivational factor must be met
