Who resigned from the Labour Party in august 1914? Why?
Ramsay MacDonald. He was a pacifist and unwilling to support Britain’s involvement in war.
When the war was announced, what did a group of 10 pacifists form? What did it encourage ?
The no-conscription fellowship (NCF). It encouraged men to refuse war.
The the independent Labour Party support or oppose war? Why? What happened to them as a result?
They opposed war.
They believed it was a capitalist plot to make profit and to weaken the working classes.
In the early months of war, they were beaten and attacked, and some were prosecuted on various pretexts.
What happened on august 9th 1914? What was the aim of the event?
There was the first anti-war demonstration held in Glasgow green.
Aim was to demand armistice, protesting at the rising food prices and calling for gov distribution of food.
Who was invited to ‘freedom of the city’ in Glasgow? And what did it bring about? Who did people believe should get it instead?
Lloyd George.
Brought about violent demonstrations against such action with calls that the ‘freedom of the city’ should be given to john Maclean and others instead as they were in prison for their anti/ war stance.
Why was John Maclean important? What happened to him?
Because of his anti - war stance.
He was arrested and handed over to the military authorities. There was public outcry forced his release to the civil authorities.
What was John Maclean charged and sentenced with ?
He was charged with 6 counts related to anti war comments allegedly made at meetings in the January. He was sentenced to three years penal servitude.
