Education Act
Explain + Example
Many Scots in rural areas were poorly educated
eg. The Education Act was introfuced in 1872 which provided free education for all 5-13 year olds
Mechanisation

Threashing machines cut down man power for harvesting crops
eg. By 1870, most hay and grain were harvested using threashing machines, meaning scots working on these farms were no longer needed
Improved Transport abroad
Explain + Example
The invention of the steamship made travel abroad easier, quicker, and cheaper
eg. In the 1850s it took over six weeks to cross the Atlantic, but by 1914 it only took one week.
Letters home
Explain + Example
Scots who had already migrated wrote letters home to family and friends telling them about the better life they were experiencing
eg. Letters sent home from family who moved to Nova Scotia and had found work in the shipbuilidng industry which told of their successes
Gold in Australia
Explain + Example
Disovery of gold in Australia, scots drawn in by promise of discovering own fortunes and could get rich quick
eg. Gold was discovered in New South Wales, Ausralia in 1823, and around 100,000 scots came to Australia between 1850 and 1860
Bright lights of the city
Explain + Example
In rural lowland areas scots lacked the social life people enjoyed in the citities
eg. Football games such as Celtic and Rangers
Charity help
Explain + Example
Many children lived in care homes and faced little chances, Charities were set up to assist emigration for children
eg. Barnardos charity helped over 100,000 children emigrate to Canada
