Isotopes - Unit 2 Flashcards
What are isotopes
-one of two or more species of atoms of a chemical element with the same atomic number and position in the periodic table and nearly identical chemical behaviour but with DIFFERENT atomic masses and physical properties.
-Every chemical element has one or more isotopes
Important Factors of Isotopes
- They have the same number of protons
- Different atomic mass unit
- Different number of neutrons
How to find protons
Atomic Number = number of protons
Mass = 1 atomic mass unit
How to find neutrons
= Atomic mass - protons
How to find electrons
It is based on the atomic number
What is the charge of an atom
It is neutral.
Electrons = Protons
What is the charge of ions
They can be positive or negative
For ex: Electrons = Protons - charge of the chemical element
Eg: Li = 2 e
How to find average amu?
= sum of : atomic mass x (relative abundance / 100)
