Isotopes and Ions Flashcards
It is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom (designated as Z)
Atomic Number
The sum number of nucleons (A=P+N)
Mass Number
Atoms of an element that differ in neutron count
Isotopes
When the atom is electrically charged because the numbers of the subatomic particles are not equal, it is called as
ion
A positively charged atom. It is formed when an atom when an atom loses one or more valence electrons.
cation
Negatively charged atoms. Formed when an atom gains one or more electrons
Anion
They have eight outer electrons or an octet of electrons
Noble gases
This is to achieve the same electron arrangement as the noble gases
Octet Rule
Groups that will release electrons (cation)
Group I, II, III
Groups that will accept or attract electrons (anion)
Group 5, 6, 7
Find the number of protons, electrons, and neutrons when Z=14 and A=28
P=14
E=14
N=14
Find the atomic number and the number of neutrons and protons of Roentgenium when A=280 and the E=111
Z=111
P=111
N=169
Find the number of electrons, the mass, and the atomic number of Germanium when P=32 and the N=41
E=32
A=73
Z=32
Give the charge of the anion formed when a bromine atom accepts an electron
Br-
Give the charge of the cation formed when an aluminum atom loses electrons
Al3+
