Isotopes Flashcards
1
Q
What is an isotope?
A
An atom of the same element with the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
2
Q
How to work out number of protons?
A
Small number on periodic table and is equal to atomic number
3
Q
How to work out number of electrons in an atom?
A
Small number on periodic table and is equal to atomic number
4
Q
How to work out the number of neutrons in an isotope?
A
On periodic table, take the smaller number from the bigger number (mass number - atomic number)
5
Q
What does the mass number represent on the periodic table?
A
Number of protons plus number of neutrons.
6
Q
How to calculate relative atomic mass?
A
(Mass 1 x percentage 1 + mass 2 x percentage 2)/100
