isotopes Flashcards
what is an isotope?
Isotopes of an element share the same number of protons but have different numbers of neutrons. Elements have many different isotopes.
what changes between isotopes (atomoic mass and atomic number)
The atomic mass changes for an element’s isotope as the amount of neutrons change. The atomic number does not change as the number of protons do not change. If the atomic number is changed, so is the element.
uses of stable isotopes
they are used as tracers and in enviromental or ecological processes
uses of radioisotopes
locate leaks in pipelines, medicinal purposes, such as killing cancer kills via radiation, they can also be used to sterilize food and equipment.
what is a radioisotope
Radioisotopes are the unstable form/isotope of an element that emit radiation to transform into a more stable form.
what are the negative uses of radioisotopes
Radioisotopes can be poisoness for humans, animals and any living things. They are extremely deadly and can be used to make bombs, cause hair loss, skin burns and death. They can pose a serious direct or external radiation threat and can be lethal depending on the amount received.
what are the positives of radioisotopes
radioisotopes are highly valuble in medicinal purposes, such as killing cancer cells, researching red blood cells, and sterilizing surgical equipment. They also allow smoke detectors to work and many other benefits.
