Isotopes Flashcards
What are isotopes?
atoms with the same number of protons, but different number of neutrons
How are different isotopes different from each other?
they have different masses
What can the mass number of an isotope be referred to as?
relative isotopic mass
What properties do isotopes have in common?
they have the same chemical properties - same electronic structure
What similar properties do isotopes have?
very similar physical properties
What does mass spectroscopy show?
the existence of isotopes and their relative abundances
Where is the relative atomic mass (Ar) shown?
in the mass number
What does the mass spectroscopy show??
in the whole universe, every sample of chlorine that we take and put onto the mass spectrometer, it shows us that out of all chlorine, only 75% of all chlorine is chlorine 35 - it is a common isotope, and 25% of chlorine tested is chlorine 37
