What is the purpose of ISM?
To provide an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention.
What are the objectives set out by the ISM?
To ensure safety at sea
Prevent human injury or loss of life
Avoid damage to the environment, in particular the marine environment and property
What must a safety management system do?
Provide safe practices and a safe work environment.
Identify risk and establish safeguards.
Continuously improve safety management skills of personnel ashore and onboard.
What are all companies required to have to improve ship-shore communication?
Designated person ashore who can act as a direct link between upper management and ship.
What documents will be issued for ISM compliant ships?
Document of compliance and SMS certificate.
What are the 3 security levels associated with ISPS?
Level 1 - Normal operating level for ships
Level 2 - Enhanced security level
Level 3 - There is a specific threat to port or ship
As per ISPS what must the ship security officer do?
Undertake regular inspections.
Implement security plan and propose changes.
Report to CSO.
Ensure record keeping is undertaken.
Who is ultimately responsible for the security of the vessel?
The Master who should liaise closely with the SSO
