Shia Muslims believe that the Prophet publicly designated his cousin and son-in-law, Hazrat Ali (peace be upon him), as the first in a line of hereditary Imams from the Prophet’s family to lead the community after him. Sunni believe Hazrat Abu Bakr first caliph, Hazrat Umar, Hazrat Uthman, and Hazrat Ali. Over time, the caliphs came to be seen mainly as political rulers,. Sunnis focus on following the Prophet’s example whereas Shi’a focus on the lineage of Muhammad’s family through a series of Imams.
