They are the duties all Muslims must undertake - join Muslims together in a community and show obedience to god

There is only one god

Ritual washing before a Muslim prays

What is rak’ah?
The set sequence of actions for prayer (morning 2 and night 4)
What is jummah prayer?
Midday prayer every Friday where all males attend the mosque and pray together (women can also)
Why is prayer important?
It is something allah has commanded them to do
“Call on me and I will answer you”

Their duty to help the poor (invite people to meals)
What is the night of power?
An important festival that marks the beginning of gods revelation to Muhammad
What are the benefits of fasting?
Brings Muslims closer to allah
All sins are forgiven for those who fast
Serves as a reminder for the poor
Builds self-determination, humility and courage
What is zakah?
Giving 2.5% of a Muslims savings to the poor
What do Muslims believe about zakah?
Helps purify the soul
Everything hey own comes from god and belongs to him
How can zakah be donated?
Through charity’s such as Muslim aid or collection box in mosque “alms are meant only for the poor, the needy”
What are Muslims also encouraged to do?
Give their time and money voluntarily at any point in the year - called Sadaqah
Why is zakah important?
It fulfils a duty imposed by god
Gives Muslims good attitudes towards money
Strengthens communities by helping the poor
What is Khums?
A tax set at 20% yearly (half goes to Shi’a leaders and other given to charity)
What is hajj?
The pilgrimage (journey made for religious reasons) that should be made once in a life “pilgrimage to the house is a duty owned by god by people who are able to undertake it”
How is hajj preformed?
Dress in two in pieces of cloth (ihram) around waist and shoulder - to show they are equal
Hajj begins in Mecca, cirlcle the ka’aba 7 times
Then walk and drink water from the Zamzam well (has healing qualities)
Then travel to a camp at Mina (they meditate and pray asking for forgiveness)
Then collect stones to throw at the Jamarat (stone walls that represent the devil and temptation) to reject evil
Some then sacrifice an animal
Pilgrims return to Ka’aba and circle 7 times
Why is Hajj important?
Can bring about spiritual transformation (make a better person)
Shows self discipline
Emphasises quality
Lead to forgiveness of sin
What is Jihad?
Means struggling against evil
What is greater jihad?
Personal struggle - avoiding temptation
What is lesser jihad?
Outward struggle to defend Islam from threat
What is Id-Ul-Fitr? (Eid-ul-fitr)
Festival that marks the end of ramadan. Thanks is for guidance and wisdom
How is Eid celebrated?
Father in mosques to say special prayers
Everyone wears best clothes/ decorates homes
What is Id-ul-Adha?
(Greater Eid) Remembers the prophet ibrahim. It teaches about sacrifice
What is Ashura?
The day of remembrance
Sunni - day of atonement (Noah)
Shi’a - death of Husayn (day of mourning)
