What is Tabarra?
Not associating with enemies of God
What is Jihad?
The struggle to maintain faith and defend Islam
What is Khums?
20% tax, half to charity and half to religious leaders
What is Tawallah?
Showing love to God and people who follow him
How do Sunnis and Shias pray differently?
Sunnis pray 5x a day, Shias pray 3x
Shias pray on a clay disc, like Muhammad
What is Amr-bil-Maruf?
Encouraging people to do what is good
What is Nahi Anil Munkar?
Discouraging people from doing what is wrong
What is salah?
Daily prayer
What is zakat?
Giving money to charity
What is sawm?
Fasting during Ramadan
What three things do Muslims do during prayer?
- Prostrate - to show submission to Allah
- Pray towards Makkah (mihrab)
- Wudu - ritual cleansing to fully focus on God
Why is prayer significant for Muslims?
Muslims feel closer to God
Reminds them of God’s superiority
Unites Muslims worldwide
What was the Night of Power?
When the angel Jibril first appeared to Muhammad
How do Muslims commemorate the Night of Power?
They stay awake the whole night praying and studying the Qur’an
What is lesser Jihad?
Defending Islam from threat or persecution
What is greater Jihad?
The inner struggle to live according to Islam
What are the six stages of Hajj?
- Entering a state of Ihram (cleansing and putting on white robes)
- Circling the Ka’aba x7
- Walking between two hills x7
- Pray at Mount Arafat (last sermon)
- Throw rocks at three stone pillars
- Sacrifice an animal, meat given to poor
What is Id-ul-Fitr?
Celebrates the end of Ramadan
Exchanging cards, presents, wearing new clothes and decorating houses
What is Id-ul-Adha?
Celebrates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice Ismael for Allah, and also completing Hajj
