Mosque/Masjid
Muslim house of worship (mosque in English, masjid in Arabic. The translation of masjid is to kneel.)
Qibla
irection. The wall faces towards Mecca, the side you pray to, niches for focus.
Mihrab
Niche in Qibla wall.
Minaret
Tower where the Muezzin calls the faithful to pray, no religious symbolism. There is a tube running from the bottom to the top so person doesn’t have to climb for prayer call.
Islam
Submission to the will of God, anionic religion.
The Kaaba
A holy shrine in Mecca, where Mohammed declared was the first free area to worship God, made in a Q shape, most important shrine in Mecca (where meccans were cleansed of false idols, etc).
Tessellation
A complex shape which contains the original shape inside of them.
Pointed Arch
an arch made with 2 circles overlapping. Was developed from muslim architects → crusaders take idea back to Europe.
Onion Dome
A dome that bulges in the middle and rises to a point,
Mughal Arch
Arch made in the Mughal era, made using 4 circles.
Crenellated (cutaway) Arch
Mughal arch, but with crenellations
Mausoleum
A tomb, but where you burn someone’s ashes instead of burying them.
Madrasa
Teaching mosque where only adults go to learn.
Mughal Era
It had 14 emperors that conquered India and ruled for 800 years. Some parts of India are still Mughal. The Mughal era made Mughal Arches and the Taj Mahal.
Crenellations
Rectangular cutouts at intervals, usually used at the top of castle battlements.
