What does Shahadah mean?
Declaration of faith
What does Salah mean?
Five daily prayers
What does Zakah mean?
Giving of wealth as a tax to the poor and needy
What does Sawm mean?
Fasting during the month of Ramadan
What does Hajj mean?
pilgrimage
What does Jihad mean?
Martyrdom- warriors who died in the name of Allah are sent directly to Jannah. Jihad is the struggle to live in the way Allah wants
What does Amr-bil-Maroof mean?
Commanding what is right . Maroof means something that is right and just. Shi’a Muslims believe they have a duty to promote good actions .
What is Khums?
An annual taxation of one- fifth (20%) of savings. Khums is paid to religious leaders and used to help poor and needy people
What does Nahi Anil Munkar mean?
Forbidding what is wrong. Munkar is something that is evil and Shi’a Muslims believe they have a duty to stop wrong if they are able
What does Tawalia mean?
Expressing love towards good. Shi’a Muslims believe in expressing love to those who are righteous and who believe in Allah.
Tabarra
Expressing disassociation and hatred towards evil . They believe they have a duty to hate and distance themselves from evil doers and enemies of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Some Sunni Muslims believe this can cause conflict in the world and within the Muslim community
What is Shahadah?
- Declaration of faith
- Consists of two statements ‘ There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad SAW is his messenger’
- It embodies Muslim belief in Tawhid and reflects the monotheistic nature of Islam.
- Allah is only worthy of worship because he alone is God and Supreme over all things .
- Second part of his declaration is a reminder that he chose to reveal himself to Muhammad SAW and other prophets before him
What does Shahadah mean for a Muslim?
Makes it clear that only Allah is worthy of worship because he alone is God and supreme over all things, and to place anything above him would be the Sin of Shirk. The 2nd part of the declaration is a reminder to believers that Allah has chosen to reveal himself to people through Muhammad SAW and other prophets before him
